Currently, one of the biggest comparisons is about Flamengo from the 80s and 2019. For many, these are considered the greatest generations within the Gávea club. Two generations that brought many titles and recognition to the fans. But is one better than the other?
Many say there is no way to compare because football has evolved a lot. Others say that it is not possible to compare because Zico is incomparable. There is a lot of talk, but the truth is that the only person who can say it properly is someone who has seen both generations. I only saw the 2019 one, so it's the best for me.
Flamengo Regatas Club
I can say that Flamengo is one of the biggest football clubs in Brazil and the world, with a history rich in achievements and eternal glories. Founded in 1895, the club is based in the city of Rio de Janeiro and has one of the biggest fans in the country.
Therefore, throughout its history, Flamengo has won several important titles, such as the Copa Libertadores da América, the Campeonato Brasileiro, the Copa do Brasil, the Campeonato Carioca and the Recopa Sul-Americana. The club also had great idols over the years, such as Zico, Leandro, Júnior, Adriano, Romário and many others.
Flamengo went through many difficulties on and off the field. However, in recent years, Flamengo has enjoyed a period of great success, with a very strong team and competent management work. In 2019, the team won the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Championship, in a historic season that went down in the club's history. Furthermore, Flamengo has invested in structure and modernization, with the construction of a new training center and the expansion of its stadium, Maracanã.
Flamengo fans are known for being one of the most passionate and fanatical in the world, and the club has a large presence on social networks and the media in general. Furthermore, Flamengo is a club that is always concerned with social responsibility and solidarity actions, such as carrying out social projects and actions to help needy communities.
Flamengo in the 80s
Although I haven't seen it, I've always heard that Flamengo in the 80s was one of the most iconic teams in the history of Brazilian football. Under the command of coach Carlinhos, the team won a series of important titles and assembled a team full of stars who entered the club's history.
One of the team's highlights was maestro Zico, who was the team's great leader and is considered one of the greatest players in the history of Brazilian football. In addition to Zico, Flamengo had other great players, such as Júnior, Leandro, Andrade and Adílio.
In 1980, Flamengo won the Copa Libertadores da América. In the same year, the team was also Brazilian champion, in a memorable campaign.
In the following years, Flamengo continued to win important titles, such as the Campeonato Carioca, the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Taça Guanabara. The team went on to compete in another Interclub World Cup final, in 1981, but ended up being defeated by Liverpool, from England.
Throughout the 1980s, Flamengo established itself as one of the main teams in Brazilian football and became a true reference for subsequent generations of players and fans.
2019 Flamengo
However, what I can say is that Flamengo in 2019 was also a very strong team, which won important titles and entered the club's history. Just like the team from the 80s, the 2019 team had great players and an experienced and competent coach.
Among the team's most important players were Gabigol, Bruno Henrique, Everton Ribeiro and Arrascaeta, who formed a very powerful and efficient attack. Furthermore, the team had experienced and talented players such as Diego Ribas, Filipe Luís and Rafinha, who brought a lot of quality and leadership to the group.
Coach Jorge Jesus also played a fundamental role in the team's assembly and success. He implemented an attacking and engaging style of play that won over fans and left opponents worried.
Just like the team from the 80s, Flamengo in 2019 won important titles, such as the Libertadores da América and the Campeonato Brasileiro, and enchanted fans with high-level football. The team also competed in the Club World Cup, just like the 1981 team, and although it was defeated in the final by Liverpool, it showed that the club continues to search for new achievements and glory.
What is the best generation?
As I said, for me the best generation is the 2019 one because I saw it played. However, how can we say that the 80s generation with Zico and company wasn't also masterful? It is very difficult to give an opinion on this. Which makes me believe that, in fact, this discussion shouldn't even exist. Flamengo fans have to take advantage of all the good moments and titles and celebrate a lot.
