Many people have the desire to learn English alone, for that, use these techniques. For many years, the English language has taken the place of a universal language and, therefore, many people have needed to learn English to allow them to communicate with people of different nationalities. With the advancement of technology and faster access to information, it has become more necessary to be able to communicate with as many people at the same time, and this is the role that English plays in real life: a way of connecting with everyone. world.
For a long time, learning English was related to people having the conditions or opportunities to travel to other countries where people speak English, or to work in a profession that had the English language as a requirement or necessity. For a long time, English was not so present in the daily lives and lives of most Brazilians. But that has changed!
What is learning English?
When we talk about learning English, we are talking about learning ways to use that language for the purpose we want. And like all languages in the world, it has an oral form (listening and speaking) and a written form (reading and writing). So, when we talk about learning English, we are talking about how to apply the language in these two ways of using it.
Learning English alone
Most people, when they want to learn English, look for a course or a language school, so they can study and there they have a teacher and a methodology that will teach them how to use English in all 3 ways simultaneously.
But when we talk about learning alone, what gives the most results is developing each form of use separately so that, over time, they complement each other.
To do this, we need to establish a learning order. And the order that works best, based on my more than 15 years of experience, is: first develop listening, then speaking, after that develop reading and, finally, writing.
How to develop listening?
The ear is responsible for transmitting and translating sounds to the brain. Therefore, our ear can be trained to recognize certain sounds or frequencies.
So, the best way to develop your listening skills is to listen to as much English as you can. If you are going to listen to music, choose international music. If you are going to watch films or series, watch everything with subtitles.
At this stage of developing listening, don’t worry about “learning”. You are learning to listen, and this is done by listening. Just let your ears adapt to the language.
Developing speech
Once you develop your listening skills and your ear is familiar with English, you begin to be able to emit what you are hearing. Your brain begins to be able to hear the sound, interpret it and then emit what it heard.
To develop speaking, watch a film or episode of a series that you have already watched in English and start repeating the phrases that you hear and understand the sound that is being spoken. When a character asks a question, repeat the question they asked. If necessary, pause and rewind the video to repeat correctly. Do this often and make it a habit.
As you develop your speech, it is important to pay attention to the subtitles and assimilate what is being said. When you understand the sound, can reproduce it and read what is being said, your brain begins to internalize the practical use of the language and, when you need it, you will be able to use what you learned in the same context.
How to develop reading?
Once you can identify the sounds of words and can reproduce them, it's time to see how these sounds are written.
To do this, put the same video that you used to develop the speech and now put the subtitles in English. At this point, your brain may not yet remember all the meanings of the lines in the video, but when it does, it will make the connection and you will be reading in English and understanding what is written.
Developing writing
The written form will be the last to be learned because it is the transcription of what you want to say, it is putting your speeches on paper. Therefore, you need to know how to speak before writing, just as children learn.
Once you develop reading skills, your brain will be familiar with words written in English and writing will become easier. And then, you can use the technique of transcribing the texts you read, the films you watch or the music you like.
By doing this, you will learn English by yourself.
