Recently, the new Netflix movie: Rental Wife. The Brazilian film has renowned actors and actresses in its cast and brings to the platform a genre little explored by national cinema in recent times, which is the romantic comedy. This is a genre that always attracts many viewers because it takes you to emotional extremes, one moment you are laughing and then you find yourself crying with emotion.

Synopsis: Luiz (Caio Castro) is a 30-year-old boy who has never had long-lasting relationships. When his mother discovers terminal cancer, her only wish for her son is for him to get married and settle down in life. To convince her that he had changed and that he deserved the will of millions, he hired an actress to pretend to be his wife.

The context of the film

Luiz (Caio Castro) lives in a family made up of women, with him being the only man. The fact that his father is not present is explained at a certain point in the film when he says that this is one of the reasons he acts the way he does in his relationships.

He is a professional bachelor, and he is proud of it, but he still lives with his mother Carlota (Patrícia Travassos) and still receives an allowance from her. She, in turn, is very concerned about the fact that her son is not concerned about stabilizing himself in life,

Parallel to this, he has other sisters. But the one who stands out most in the film is Maria Inez (Mariana Xavier) who did not accept the fact that she stopped being the youngest with the arrival of Luiz 30 years ago.

When his mother discovers she has little time left to live and asks him to get married, Luiz hires a Rental Wife called Lina (Thati Lopes) and invents a whole story so that his mother believes he is evolving. Like all stories similar to this one, this one tends and will have a twist.

First impressions

The film begins by telling the story of the lifestyle that Luiz (Caio Castro) leads in relationships and why he calls himself a professional bachelor. At this point he begins to list his way of acting and tell you how his rules work.

So far, so good for me, it was in line with what I expected from the film since the name Rental Wife, as well as the synopsis, refer us to already renowned films in American cinema. So, for me, everything was going OK.

When professional single Luiz leaves the scene and Carlota's son Luiz (Patrícia Travassos) enters, the film starts to seem a little pointless at first because the difference between Luiz's two personalities was so stark. This caused me some blockage because it seemed very disjointed. This also made me feel like the film was a bit dull. But I kept watching.

Final thoughts about the film

As the plot unfolded, I began to realize that Luiz's intention to appear as two different people was the same, and that, throughout the film, he discovered himself as a new person. The evolution of the character is notable, and the film is largely based on that.

As the story unfolds and Luiz and Lina begin to get closer and discover their harmony as a couple, the film becomes much more attractive. At this point, my guard was already down and I was letting out laughter mixed with tears.

My perception is that the beginning was created to establish a very large distance from where the character Luiz would reach his peak, and for me it worked very well. It went from a guy I didn't like to one I was rooting for at the end. This twist is a hallmark of great productions.

In short, the film is very good with great performances by Caio Castro and Thati Lopes. This last one, for me, stole the show and carried the film on its shoulders. An acting show!

I confess that I didn't know much about her work, but I was surprised, she did it and it happened in Esposa de Aluguel. She played an actress who played multiple roles and did very well at it. Outstanding performance!

This is an excellent film to watch alone, as a couple or as a family. A beautiful job by Netflix with this national production.
