The 2023 edition of Big Brother Brasil has just started and the question that is most common on social media is: will BBB23 also flop? In this article, we will show why every edition starts with the threat of being flopped. People on the internet are already starting to speculate about what the edition will be like as soon as the participants are announced. When they enter the house, in fact, conclusions begin to be drawn about their performance in the game.

It's true that the BBB game is unknown for all of us. As much as we have watched so many previous editions, no one can know exactly what it will be like. Neither the participants found the ideal way to play, nor the spectators created criteria for their votes. The truth is that Big Brother Brasil is a game that affects people's emotions. Both from those who play and those who watch.

Once the edition of BBB23 was announced and anticipated by Globo, speculation began about who the members of Camarote would be. It is worth remembering that the original format in Big Brother Brasil was made up only of unknown participants. This meant that the game only started when the names and profiles of the participants were revealed. But the format changed and celebrities were added to the entertainment. This, in itself, is already one of the reasons for criticism from the audience. 

Therefore, the question arises “Why hire people who don’t need the money?” among internet users. Many question that Camarote participants are not there to play for the prize but to gain more visibility. And this really happened to many and it was something very beneficial for the careers of many artists. Including the popcorns (unknown participants) who had their images linked to celebrities. This worked great! The 2020 edition was the pinnacle of entertainment. But those that came later, in the audience's view, flopped. Will BBB23 also flop?

We all have to agree that the 2020 edition of Big Brother Brasil was iconic in several aspects. The group selected for the Camarote included many well-known television and internet celebrities such as Bianca Andrade (Boca Rosa), Babu Santana (icon of Brazilian television drama), Manu Gavassi (singer and friend of Bruna Marquezine), Rafa Kaliman (Influencer) and Pyong Lee (magician and influencer), for example. Most of them had their loyal audience and the sympathy of other viewers as well.

But, surprisingly, the one who stole the show in this edition was Pipoca, who for many is considered the best player in all editions of the BBB: Felipe Prior. A participant who generated many controversies among the public throughout his career in the house. But he proved to be a great player and an excellent strategist, as well as having a strong personality and a sarcasm that was difficult to contain. He divided opinions inside and outside the house. At the same time that he was a rival of Manu Gavassi and his group, there were those who shipped them both here outside the house. Go figure!

The great truth is that the 2020 edition brought gigantic entertainment and a very high level of competitiveness. How can we forget the day that Prior put just him and Babu in the VIP and left the WHOLE house in the xepa? Impossible. It was too iconic! And, as much as we were ecstatic about the 2020 edition, believing it to be the best of all time, we would only see its negative impact the following year, in the BBB21 edition. Prior's edition has reached a level that all others would be compared to, and none, so far, have come close to it.

With the success and repercussion of the previous edition, BBB21 drew the attention of celebrities to the great possibility of participating in the reality show. After all, almost everyone's career took off after the edition, of the Camarote participants then, Boca Rosa say so. She did her marketing! And this led to big names agreeing to participate in the program in the following edition, such as Projota, Carla Diaz, Rodolffo, Fiuk and Karol Conká, for example.

This cast generated very high expectations, much greater than BBB20. Imagine having the opportunity to get to know Projota up close, intimately. Who never wanted to be his friend when they heard him sing “Moleque de Vila”? Well, this would be the opportunity to see all the teachings he taught in his raps being put into practice in everyday life at home. Just like Karol Conká, super engaged in different movements. Really, this edition would be incredible. But that's not what happened!

Faced with countless surprisingly questionable attitudes, the main names of the BBB21 edition became less liked by the audience every day. The internet couldn't believe that their idols were capable of behaving like that. And this great indignation grew into something bigger, more harmful, and the republic of canceling the BBB21 boxes was created.

Celebrities who entered with solid careers due to decades of work, left with their names linked to the worst things. And what you can see in the face of all this is how much Big Brother Brasil can lift or destroy you. Icons of Brazil were canceled in the edition in which an unknown became one of Brazil's biggest celebrities. With an image worth millions, more than the ones she earned on the show. Juliette suffered what she suffered at the hands of celebrities and, in the end, became the most beloved celebrity.

This seems to be the question that celebrities began to ask themselves after the 2021 edition. Is it worth putting your career at risk for visibility that is real, but that can throw you off your feet? Will it flop? Is it worth the risk? And it seems the answer for many has been that it's not worth it. From 2020 to 2021, we noticed an evolution in the cabin participants. After the “cancelled” edition, it seems that it has been more difficult to bring in big names and, compared to the BBB20 edition, all editions are flops.

In 2022, we had the edition of Arthur Aguiar and Jade Picon. Edition with celebrities with less media impact, except for Jade, perhaps, and with a cast completely concerned about the cancellation of the previous edition. There was even entertainment, but when Jade had her clash with Arthur, she began to be canceled out here and suffers to this day (her career as an actress is still not recognized by many). And after she left, the game became more of the same. It flopped, as many said.

BBB23 starts under the curse of BBB20. Before it even starts, everyone is already comparing it to Prior's edition. Fans are already criticizing the participants before they even enter the most watched house in Brazil. And this is not just in relation to the public, but also to the participants. Gabriel has already said that he wants to be the Prior of this edition, Cezar (popcorn) said to Mc Guimê (one of the most famous) that it is a shame in this edition that there is no one “famous”. Like this? Does he already think that BBB23 will also flop?

This shows that even the participants are changing their view of the reality show itself. At the same time that the audience reacts here too, saying that Camarote is not Bapho (as Felipe Neto would say). Therefore, this creates a great negative expectation for everyone, which certainly influences the game at home. The game stops being a game of entertainment and becomes a game of controversial positions. People raise important issues to stand out to the public and avoid others so as not to get burned.

What it seems is that the spontaneity of the game has been lost. Now, everyone is worried about not being canceled out here. Furthermore, this atmosphere was not only created among those who participated, but also for those who watched. For example, on social media, what you see most is a fan lamenting that their idol is going to participate in BBB23 because they are afraid of being disappointed with who they really are. – I myself, who wrote this text, was already disappointed with a BBB23 participant, whose work I admired, saying things that I had not imagined. – And this makes the game tend to be more rigid and mechanical in some aspects.

In short, it's too early to say whether BBB23 will flop or not. However, one thing is certain: if the audience doesn't forget BBB20, all editions will start flopping for the majority. Unless something very extraordinary happens that makes the 2023 edition much better than BBB20. But, the truth is that, so far, the game is heading towards being another lukewarm and standard edition after BBB20. Let's wait and see how it will unfold.
